Think about it: what if all the world’s music were like an over-compressed MP3 – crammed into the 20 Hz to 20.5 kHz band. If you could only hear up to 20 kHz, it’d be like taking the cheese off a pizza.

In reality, musical instruments don’t stop at the 20 Hz – 20 kHz range. For example, measurable harmonics from 40 to 80 kHz can be present in the spectrum of a violin, cymbal, or oboe. And while we may not hear them like a dog, cat, or tarantula…
